When the war spread to Kosovo, Sally and her volunteers brought aid to both sides but as the war escalated the aid organizations pulled out of the region and the borders were closed. Knowing that there were children in desperate need of help, Sally crossed the mountains on foot with medical supplies for the besieged hospital in Junik. She found many sick and wounded children living beneath the rubble of their homes and was asked to help them. The only way out was back across the mountains to Albania but as they approached the border, they were ambushed by Serb paramilitaries. The women and children fled back into the forest and later crossed the border to safety. Sally remained behind to help a mother and her two children who were pinned down by gunfire but they were soon forced to surrender. The woman and her two children were released within forty eight hours but Sally was sentenced to thirty days in prison.

The photos were taken by Rafaelli Cierello who managed to escape into the forest. He was tragically killed in 2002 whilst filming in Gaza.
